Neighbors Reach Out on Cross the Street Day
Continued
Cross the Street utilizes a simple concept that has enormous payoffs. What can be easier than building community on your own neighborhood block by knocking on your neighbor's door and introducing yourself? This type of activity has the potential to make our neighborhood environments much friendlier and safer. It's not only a wonderful opportunity for individuals, but many Neighborhood Associations are seeing the benefit of Cross the Street and using it as a means of connecting in their communities.
The Heritage Square Neighborhood Association and the Cathedral District Neighborhood Association were both active on Cross the Street Day. The efforts put forth by the presidents of these Associations are greatly appreciated so a special thanks to Mark Oberschmidt and Jeff Bookmyer.
Various Neighborhood Associations in Buena Vista Charter Township and Bridgeport Charter Township also continued their support and involvement. With a little creativity, planning and foresight Cross the Street can be a very useful tool for creating community.
Since the inception of Cross the Street Day in 2003, Faith Harvest Church located at 1734 N. Mason has used this day to develop community in its own backyard. Every year the parking lot is filled with games, activities, food, sights and sounds to connect with the many families that live in the vicinity of the church.
The theme for this year's Cross the Street Day event at Faith Harvest Church was "Come Meet the People in your Neighborhood." The afternoon was filled with activities and presentations by Covenant Healthcare Lifenet of Michigan, the Fire & Injury Prevention Safety House, Engine #4 of the Saginaw Fire Department, the H2C-Honor to Christ Youth Group added the finishing touches to the afternoon by stirring up the crowd with an exhilerating music ministry.
Pastors Ronald and Phyllis Chipp are certainly to be commended for their foresight in seeing the immense value of this community building event. Churches have traditionally been known as the cornerstone of neighborhoods and can be utilized as facilitators for building community. Cross the Street can be used as a tool to start and continue the process.
Cross the Street 2007 will be celebrated on May 19, 2007. This day will mark the 5th Year Anniversary and plans are already underway to make it a grand celebration.
