Got Community . . . Cross the Street
Continued
The person behind this effort is Rhonda Webb, who has been a Saginaw resident since 2001.  Webb firmly believes that communities are changed one person at a time.  "We can have a tremendous impact on our neighborhoods by the simple act of being friendly."

Cross the Street was born out of a sincere desire to see the lost art of 'community' return to our neighborhoods.  Cross the Street can be considered a meet your neighbor day, or a day of deliberate friendliness. This annual event utilizes bright fuchsia door hangers to get the word out  in neighborhoods.  Just hang the door hangers on your neighbor's door and they'll expect a friendly knock and hello on Cross the Street Day.

Imagine a day spent saying 'hello' to everyone you personally encounter.  Better yet imagine going down to your neighbor's house, knocking on the door just to say hello and introduce yourself. This was a common practice that has been lost due to a number of factors but if we cultivate the practice again we can begin to make it a normal way of relating to one another.

Over the past four years Cross the Street has received proclamations from: the Saginaw County Board of Commissioners, City of Saginaw, Bridgeport Township, Tittabawassee Township and Buena Vista Charter Township.

In 2005 Buena Vista took their commitment to friendliness to a whole new level by recognizing the 3rd Saturday in May as an annual celebration of Cross the Street Day.

Webb is very grateful to these communiites for their forsight in seeing the value of such an initiative.  Another one of her strongest supporters are her Pastors; the Reverends Ronald and Phyllis Chipp of Faith Harvest Church.

In 2003 Faith Harvest Church held a community cookout inviting the neighbors around the church for refreshments, church tours and games and in 2005 Faith Harvest held a Cross the Street Day Rally to acquaint the neighboring families with this engaging event. Webb would like to see more churches take advantage of using this as a tool for reaching out to families in their own areas.

Cross the Street can also be used as a catalyst to start Neighborhood Watch Groups, Beautification Associations or even Block Clubs.

Webb understands that it can't solve the challenging issues that are facing our communities but it can certainly touch and change hearts and consider this, it takes people doing something different to affect real change. So on Saturday, May 20th 'Cross the Street' and affect your community for real change.

Contact Webb at 482-7345 to get more information and get your community, church or Neighborhood Associations involved on this fun day.  All it takes is a handshake, a friendly  smile and before you know it you've Got Community.
