Cross the Street" offers an excuse to meet neighbors
Continued
"We've gotten away from the feeling of being hospitable to people who live on the same block," Webb said.  "We live in neighborhoods where we're strangers to each other, and it didn't used to be like that."

Webb was born and raised in a Detroit neighborhood where she knew neighbors by name.  When she moved to Saginaw two years ago, she was expecting her neighbors to cross the street and welcome her, but they never did. she said.

"One thing I really love about Saginaw is that it has the potential to be a really close-knit community," she said.  Webb says she can't even go to the grocery store without bumping into someone she knows from church, her children's school  or elsewhere.
It shouldn't be such a problem to get to know people who live on the same street, she said.

Building relationships take time, but all Webb is asking for on Saturday is that people get out and say "hello."

It really doesn't require a big investment at all, she said, but she added that she's expecting big things too.  Once neighbors start getting to know neighbors again, they can start building friendly, hospitable and safer communities, she said.

In order to get the word out about the project, Webb is contacting neighborhood associations, civic groups and churches.  She is also distributing door hangers throughout the county with information about the event.
